BERBERINE: DESCRIPTION

Berberis vulgaris extract 97% titrated in berberine

Historically used by Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine as antimicrobial (1) (2) (3), berberine is a natural substance extracted from different plant species, including the plant Berberis vulgaris.

Berberine is a natural alkaloid especially effective in the control of blood glucose or sugar, as well as in the control of cholesterol, which suggests its use in the most common chronic metabolic disorders such as diabetes or hyperlipidemia (4) (5) (6) (7).

Berberine, endorsed by science

  • DIABETES AND CHOLESTEROL:

Research with berberine shows that this active principle has an action comparable to metformin. Considered as the basic treatment of type 2 diabetes, this oral antidiabetic drug shares the same mode of action with berberine: an antihyperglycemic action. Thus, metformin and berberine act to reduce blood sugar levels, avoiding the hyperglycemia characteristic of type 2 diabetes (8).

This positions berberine as one of the most effective supplements for lowering blood glucose. In diabetics, berberine at doses between 0.5-1.5 g per day for an average period of 12 weeks was associated with improvements in all measured glucose parameters but also in the control of lipids (9) (10) (11). In addition, berberine can help control the complications associated with overweight and obesity (12) (13) (14).

  • ANTIOXIDANT ACTION:

Other lines of research with berberine focus on its ability to protect against oxidative stress by reducing damage in different organs (15) (16). As a result, studies suggest its action against some neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's or Alzheimer's (17) (18) (19) or even as a promising substance in the treatment of some types of cancer(20) (21) (22).

Our Berberine
